Bullying:  What is Bullying? an intentional, repeated, negative behavior towards another/others, involving a lack of empathy and an

                                           imbalance of power. This may include electronic, verbal, or physical acts (pinching, kicking, hitting) which

                                           cause harm to another individual. This includes such actions such as making threats, spreading rumors,

                                           attacking someone physically or verbally, embarrassing someone or excluding them on purpose.

 

                        Report Bullying - Tell a parent, teacher, school counselor, or other school staff member when bullying has occured or

                                                 believe a preplanned instance is going to happen.                                          

Cold or Flu - How to Tell:    Cold Symptoms:

                                                                 *sore throat for a day or two

                                                                     *nasal symptoms - runny nose, congestion, cough four or five days

                                                                     *fever (uncommon in adults) children will sometimes have a low grade fever 

                                                                     *contagious?  The first three days of symptoms

                                                                     *if your symptoms don't improve within 7 days, you may have a bacterial infection and

                                                                        need antibiotics.

 

                                                                   Flu Symptoms:

                                                                      *symptoms are more severe than with a cold

                                                                      *sore throat two-five days

                                                                      *fever and headache with muscle soreness

                                                                      *nasal symptoms - congestion

                                                                      *cough

                                                                      *some flu strains include diarrhea and vomiting

                                                                      *symptoms usually improve in 2-5 days, but the individual will feel run down for  week 

                                                                         or more

                                                                      *complications: pneumonia (reoccurring fever after 2 days fever free is a sign)

                                                                      *re-infection can occur when proper hand washing is not done

Suicide Prevention - What to Look for and How to Respond:

 

                Risk Factors: Family stress and dysfunction, Mental illness including depression, Conduct disorders, Substance abuse,

                                     Presence of a fire arm in the home, Crisis situations (death of a loved one, physical or sexual abuse, family

                                     violence)

 

               Warning Signs: Suicidal threats made directly or indirectly, Suicide notes, plans, or songs, Prior suicidal behavior, Making

                                     could be considered final arrangements (making funeral arrangements, writing a will, giving away what 

                                     prized possessions), Preoccupation with death, Changes in behavior, thoughts, or feelings

 

               How to Respond: Remain calm, Ask the youth directly if they are considering suicide, Focus on your concern for their and

                                        avoid accusations, Listen, Reassure them that there is help and they will not feel like wellbeing 

                                        this forever, Do not judge or diminish their feelings, Provide constant supervision -  not leaving them

                                        alone for a second, Remove any means of self-harm (items they could use to hurt themselves), Do NOT

                                        Try to Handle It on Your Own - Get Help!  Peers should tell an adult and not agree to keep it a secret,

                                        Parents shoudl seek help from a community health resource as soon as possible, School staff should

                                        take the student to the school counselor, nurse, or administrator.
