JR. / SR. HIGH SCHOOL:

Steps to Success Link

School counselors help students in a variety of ways through classroom counseling lessons, group counseling sessions, and individual counseling.  Students need to concentrate on organization skills and academic excellence, but may experience personal issues that hinder their progress.  School counselors can help them through these obstacles.

It is important that 8th graders entering 9th grade be proactive in their course scheduling and know what coursework will aid them in their end goals after graduation.  School counselors help make sure all required courses are included in a student's four year plan.  The student needs to customize their four year plan to include coursework conducive to their end goal.  If they are interested in college, it is important that foreign language electives are included in their four year plan as well.

Students are encouraged to take the Career Profile Quiz at www.onetonline.org.     This site allows you to research potential careers and understand education requirements, needed skills, work environments, salaries by state, job availability/growth, and much more. Additonally, a web site that allows listeners to hear interviews of persons holding various jobs can be accessed at www.uwannadu.com.  Both sites are free.

Students need to make sure if they are working toward a specific scholarship all criteria for course work are met, especially with sports related scholarships.  Different schools/scholarships require different items for qualification.  It is the student's responsibility to know what is required and work with the school counselor to ensure all is met.

Credit recovery options are available through a retaking of the class or computer classes.   Students need to be proactive when credit recovery is needed.  The school counselor can be the link between the student and teachers to ensure credit recovery work is given to the student, but it is the student's responsibility to complete the course requirements and earn the credit.  We use Bob Jones University online classroom for most credit recovery.  Occasionally, if a student has an extra free hour, and scheduling permits, the class may be retaken in a traditional classroom setting.

Dual enrollment is available through GADSDEN STATE UNIVERSITY AND JACKSONVILLE STATE UNIVERSITY. .  The rates for each school differ and must be paid by the student.  All students participating in dual enrollment classes must score appropriately on the ACT to qualify for acceptance.  Other classes may be available through other sources and may be submitted for approval through the school office.
